Understanding the distinct experiences of gay men

Gay men often navigate complex layers of social expectation, hypervigilance, and subtle isolation. Growing up in environments that praise heteronormativity can sometimes leave quiet emotional marks, even after achieving external success or living openly. Many men find themselves carrying an implicit sense of needing to perform or keep their true feelings guarded. In our work together, we create a space to slow down and unpack these pressures without judgement.

Coming out is rarely a single event; it is an ongoing process that happens across different life stages. Whether you came out in your teens or are exploring your sexuality later in adulthood, this transition often brings profound questions about identity and family dynamics. Therapy can offer a calm space to process these changes, supporting you to explore old fears and move toward a more self-directed life.

Shared lived experience and body aware support

Working with a therapist who shares your lived experience as a gay man can provide a comfortable starting point of mutual understanding. You do not need to explain the nuances of gay dating culture, social dynamics, or minority stress. You can explore broader topics on my LGBTQ+ affirming therapy page, or see how I work with self-worth on my therapy for shame and self-esteem page.

My approach combines person-centred therapy with Somatic Experiencing to address emotional difficulties at both a psychological and physical level. Internalised shame frequently manifests as physical tension, anxiety, or difficulty feeling present in intimacy. By paying attention to bodily sensations alongside your spoken narrative, we can explore these protective physical habits and gently support a growing sense of ease.

Relationships, self-worth and online sessions

Individual therapy provides a dedicated space to explore how you relate to others, including romantic partnerships, friendships, and family connections. We look at recurring emotional patterns, boundaries, and communication styles to support you in cultivating fulfilling relationships. If you live in London, you can also view my page for an LGBTQ+ therapist in London to see how my online practice works.

Online video sessions allow you to engage in therapy from the comfort and privacy of your own home, anywhere in the UK or Ireland. Each appointment lasts 50 minutes and costs £90. The process begins with a free 20 minute introductory call, offering a calm, low pressure environment to discuss what you hope to achieve and see how we work together.

Questions about therapy for gay men

Why choose a gay therapist for online therapy?

Working with a therapist who shares your lived experience means you do not have to explain gay cultural norms or minority stress. It offers a comfortable starting point where we can focus directly on your emotional well-being without lingering over cultural definitions.

Can therapy help if I am coming out later in life?

Yes. Coming out later in adulthood involves navigating existing family, marriage, or career structures. Therapy provides a thoughtful, non-judgemental space to process your feelings, explore your identity, and consider decisions at your own pace.

What happens during the free introductory call?
